About Me

Graeme Ives Heritage Planning services are borne out of a detailed knowledge of the relevant legislation, policy and guidance and extensive practical experience of having been a consultant, decision-maker and statutory consultee within the heritage planning system.

I am an MRTPI Chartered Town Planner with a reputation for an enthusiastic approach to the historic environment, an agile mind that actively seeks solutions and a client focused approach that becomes embedded in client design teams and thrives on collaboration.

The ability to provide thorough, authentic and credible advice is based on the following:

  • A wide ranging insight gained from a background in consultancy, Historic England and the local planning authority sector.
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant legislation in the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, from ‘curtilage’ and ‘attachment’ to the ‘statutory duties’ and Urgent Works Notices.
  • Excellent knowledge and application of national policy (NPPF) and Historic England Best Practice Advice.
  • In-depth experience of the international requirements of the World Heritage Convention, the UNESCO Operational Guidelines, ICOMOS Heritage Impact Assessments and experience of UNESCO/ICOMOS reactive monitoring missions.
  • Practical experience of providing Initial Heritage Appraisals to support clients at the earliest stages of project development based on in-depth heritage and urban design expertise.
  • Experience of preparing policy compliant Heritage Statements in diverse urban and rural environments including Liverpool, Manchester, Cheshire, Birmingham, Lancaster, Coventry, Glasgow, Leeds and Cumbria.
  • Experience of a wide range of heritage asset types, including world heritage sites, listed buildings, conservation areas, registered parks and gardens and non-designated heritage assets.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of types and periods of architecture from sites with Medieval origins to the modern university campuses and commercial developments of the late C20th.
  • The wider insight gained from managing the busy Historic England Development Management team for the NW of England and being a current Panel Member for the Places Matter Design Review.
